You Customized Your Bike, Didn’t You?
Then why not customize your sports drink? Not to worry, the nice people at Infinit Nutrition have thought of this already. There’s a good chance you’ve paid a pretty penny to have your P3 fitted to you and added components that fit your personal specifications.
And why was that? Because-and here’s a no-brainer- you’re body is different from everyone else’s body.
With all due respect to Gatorade and Accelerade- two of my personal favorites- these brands have created sports drinks that meet the general needs of endurance athletes. However, the physiological needs of every athlete vary, as do our preferences, and hence the need for a product like Infinit Nutrition.
A whole lot of research went into creating this product, and the finding was that the number of calories in a sports drink is important, but what is more important is the osmolality of the solution that we drink during exercise. Osmolality is just a fancy way of referring to the molar concentration of the solution. (remember high school chemistry class?) We ought to use a sports drink that has an osmolality similar to that of our body’s cells. Otherwise, some sports drinks might actually pull water out of our cells before we can process them. So the kind folks at Infinit Nutrition created a product that has a neutral osmolality and the adaptability to fit our personal preferences.
We all know that the more difficult and intense the competition, the more important it is that every single factor is optimized.
At www.infinitnutrition.com, you can put together your own sports drink and customize:
Flavor Intensity: Some flavors are just too strong when you’re really hammering, and really sweet drinks can taste gross if they’ve been sitting in the sun while you swim. Infinit comes the way Gatorade did in the old days- Lemon Lime, Orange, and Fruit Punch.
Carbohydrate Ratios: You can also choose the ratio of Dextrose- which is quickly accessible and burned- to Maltodextrin, which is still a short chain, easily digestible carbohydrate, but it burns a bit more slowly.
Calories: You should use the general rule of thumb that you need 2 calories per pound of lean muscle mass per hour. Otherwise, your body will have to pull resources to digest the extra calories while you are competing, and your run will begin to feel like a walk around the block after Thanksgiving dinner.
Protein and Amino Acids: Move over Accelerade! You can also adjust the protein and amino acid concentration of your drink. Some people even chose to have two formulas, one with protein for the bike and one without protein for the run.
Electrolytes: Add extra electrolytes and skip the salt stick, all together.
Caffeine: Purist? Add none. Sixty year old veteran of the Italian National Cycling Team? Go ahead and throw in 30 mg of caffeine per kg of body weight. (Or a shot of espresso like they used in the old country.)
At the end of the day, the kindly scientists at Infinit Nutrition have done something pretty cool. They gave us Type-A triathlon control freaks something else to control.

Good drinking and better training,
